ABOUT

The Department of Computer Science (AI & ML) at ACE Engineering College was established with the goal of cultivating skilled engineers to meet the growing demands of the industry. The department offers a Bachelor of Technology course with an annual intake of 180 students. The curriculum is designed to provide comprehensive education in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, focusing on both theoretical and practical aspects. The department emphasizes hands-on training, industry collaborations, and research opportunities, equipping students with the skills needed to excel in this rapidly evolving field. The aim is to produce innovative thinkers and problem solvers who can contribute significantly to the advancement of AI and ML technologies.

Historical Milestones

The history of Computer Science, particularly in AI & ML, has been marked by significant milestones:
  • Early Years (1950s-1960s):
    AI pioneers like Alan Turing, Marvin Minsky, and John McCarthy laid the foundation for AI research. The Dartmouth Summer Research Project on Artificial Intelligence (1956) coined the term “Artificial Intelligence.”
  • Rule-Based Expert Systems (1970s-1980s):
    Development of rule-based expert systems, mimicking human decision-making processes. Significant contributions by researchers like Edward Feigenbaum and Douglas Lenat.
  • Machine Learning Emerges (1980s-1990s):
    Emergence of machine learning as a subset of AI, focusing on self-improving algorithms. Development of backpropagation, a key ML algorithm, by David Rumelhart, Geoffrey Hinton, and Yann LeCun.
  • AI Winter and Resurgence (1990s-2000s):
    AI experienced a period of reduced funding and interest, known as the AI winter. Despite this, advancements in neural networks and deep learning continued.
  • Modern Era (2000s-present):
    Resurgence of AI and ML driven by large datasets, computational power, and advances in deep learning. Significant applications in areas like computer vision and natural language processing. Major investments by tech giants like Google, Facebook, and Amazon.
  • Recent Breakthroughs:
    AlphaGo’s victory over a human Go champion (2016). Development of Transformers and BERT in natural language processing (2017-2018). Advancements in reinforcement learning, generative models, and Explainable AI (XAI).
This brief history highlights key milestones and advancements in AI and ML, a field that continues to evolve rapidly with new breakthroughs and applications.
